Printing White Ink on Dark Garments: Tips for Getting a Bright, Smooth Print
Printing white ink on dark garments is one of the most common challenges in screen printing. White ink is typically thicker than other screen-printing inks, and getting good opacity without creating a heavy, textured print requires the right combination of ink, mesh, squeegee, screen tension, off-contact, and printing technique.
If your white prints are dull, heavy, rough, or inconsistent, start by checking these fundamentals rather than immediately adding another layer of ink.
Here are some practical adjustments that can make a significant difference.
1. Keep Your White Ink at the Right Temperature
Cold ink can be noticeably more difficult to print. Bringing your ink to a comfortable working temperature can improve its flow and make printing easier.
You don't want to heat the ink enough to gel or cure it—the goal is simply to avoid working with cold ink. If your shop is cold, warming your platens can also help.
Don't try to print heavy white ink straight from a cold environment. At 85 degrees the white ink will be more workable.
2. Make Sure Your Squeegee Is Straight and Sharp
A squeegee that has been heavily used or improperly cleaned can develop a bow or curve. When that happens, the center of the blade may not make adequate contact with the screen, resulting in uneven pressure and insufficient ink transfer.
Before an important print job, inspect your squeegee and make sure the edge is straight and in good condition. We use a 70 durometer squeegee.
3. Choose Your Mesh Carefully
Mesh count has a major effect on ink deposit.
Lower mesh counts allow more ink to pass through the stencil and can be useful when maximum opacity is needed. Higher mesh counts deposit less ink and can make achieving a solid white more challenging.
For large, solid areas of white, choose a mesh appropriate for the artwork, ink, garment, and desired print characteristics. A 70 mesh is good to allow good coverage for white ink. In the video we use a 120, which will act more like 155-205 for white ink.

4. Use a Properly Tensioned Screen
Screen tension is particularly important when printing white ink. A screen that is too loose can make it more difficult to achieve a clean print and properly clear the ink from the stencil.
A properly tensioned screen also helps the screen snap cleanly away from the garment behind the squeegee. We have ours at 17 newtons.
5. Pay Attention to Off-Contact
Off-contact is the distance between the screen and garment before the print stroke. A small, consistent amount allows the screen to snap away from the garment as the squeegee passes, helping produce a cleaner print.
In our video we have about 3/16 of an inch off contact. Make sure your off-contact is consistent between the top and bottom of the screen. You can tape an item to the bottom of your screen to create equal off contact in places it doesn't have it if using a press with only one holder.
6. Flood the Screen Before Printing
Before making your print stroke, flood the screen with ink so the stencil openings are filled.
After printing, look at the underside of the screen. If significant ink remains in the image area, the screen hasn't completely cleared.
If the screen isn't clearing, simply adding more coats isn't necessarily going to solve the problem. Instead, adjust your printing technique. Use a pellon sheet or disposable shirt/fabric for clearing out the screen.
7. Use the Right Pressure and Squeegee Angle
When printing white ink, the goal isn't simply to push as much ink as possible onto the shirt. You want enough pressure and the correct squeegee angle to shear the ink through the stencil and clear the image area.
If the screen doesn't clear properly, residual ink can build up in the stencil and create a raised, uneven print—sometimes jokingly called a "Braille shirt" because of its texture.
It's much better to prevent the problem than try to flatten it afterward.
8. Don't Assume You Need Multiple Heavy Coats
A properly set-up white ink print generally shouldn't require layer after layer of ink.
A common approach is:

Second white print
The exact number of prints depends on the ink, garment, mesh, artwork, and desired opacity.
The goal is to achieve the required coverage with the fewest necessary print strokes while maintaining a smooth surface.

When printing multiple layers of white, the flash isn't intended to completely cure the first layer. The goal is generally to gel the ink enough to allow another layer to be printed over it.
Flash temperature and dwell time vary depending on the equipment, ink, garment, and distance from the heater. Always follow the ink manufacturer's recommendations.
Avoid over-flashing, which can create problems with the garment, ink, and subsequent print layers.
9. Different Garments Require Different Approaches
Not every garment prints the same way. Cotton generally provides a straightforward surface, while polyester and blends can introduce additional challenges such as dye migration.
Your ink selection and printing technique should be matched to the garment you're printing. For polyester and blended fabrics, use an ink designed for the application and follow the manufacturer's curing recommendations.
